Trip Recap: Tanzania
Name: John & Mary Beth Flippen
Ignite! Training Attended: June 2007
Country, City: Tanzania, Kariakoo-Zanzibar
Dates of Teaching: March 29-31, 2008
Translations Used: English to Swahili
Brief Summary: The Crown ignite! seminar was enthusiastically received by the congregation of Pastor Dickson Kaganga’s Tanzania Assembly of God City Christian Center, located on the island of Zanzibar that is peopled by a 95% Muslim population. Their hunger for the word of God and desire to learn what God says about money was not lessened by the severity of their culture nor their struggle to acquire the most basic of necessities. These men and women of God wanted to be found faithful! I will forever remember the face of the young man who asked, “How can I tell if I am giving to God so that he will bless me or whether I give because I love Him?”
Results: About 100 people were taught God’s financial principles and two people responded to the invitation of salvation! In addition, they have been invited back in August 2008 to teach the seminar professors of the four Assembly of God of Tanzania. They plan to incorporate the material into their curriculum for their seminary students so that they are prepared in this aspect of their lives!
Best Practices: Personal testimonies - my real life struggles to be found faithful, my personal giving stories, personal instances where I realized that I had been dishonest and the story to then make restitution – they all built a bridge from my heart and faith into theirs. Being real in front of the brothers in Zanzibar allowed them the grace to ask real questions about their faith, their culture, and their failings.
The King James Version of the Bible is the only version honored by the Tanzanian Assemblies of God. Any power point used will be more effective if all verses are from the King James.
Testimonies: As the missionaries who sponsored this seminar, Ron and Carol McDonald of CHARA, have marveled, “It was just a year ago that we previewed the material at the Hampton Conference. Now there are plans to have Crown in the Bible schools of Tanzania! Hey, things just don’t happen this fast in Tanzania!”
